“A Settlers Christmas in the Village” will be celebrated on Saturday, December 6, 2008 at Historic Chippewa City which is located at the junctions of Highways 7 & 59 in Montevideo. This Chippewa County Historical Society’s 30th annual event will be held from 10:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. and will celebrate the Minnesota Sesquicentennial and pioneers.
Throughout the day a variety of events will be ongoing. At 10:00 a.m. the Candy Shop and Bake Sale will begin. Area artisans will be located in various heated buildings from 10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. and will offer a large variety of unique gift items including handmade yarn, knitted and hand-woven clothing and accessories, magnetic jewelry, hardanger, cross stitch, jewelry, aprons of all kinds and styles, crocheted Christmas ornaments and decorations, Tastefully Simple gourmet foods and gifts, handspun Alpaca yarn, hand knits, weavings, and felted items, Swenson apples, jams, and cider, and stamping and knitting. Sweet Land DVD’s and books will also be available.
At the Ness House you can see “A Victorian Christmas” or visit the Anderson Cabin for “An Antebellum Christmas”. Or, you may stroll the Village to see all of the buildings decorated for the holiday season. Other treats include a visit with Santa Claus from 1:00 - 4:00 p.m., horse drawn rides from 12:00 - 3:00 p.m., and children’s crafts from 1:30 - 3:30 p.m.
Exhibits and displays on Minnesota and the pioneers will be featured in the Gateway Building and Village Hall and will include a number of artifacts previously unseen by the public, including the first election box in Chippewa County which dates to 1869. The annual program will list the day’s events, and will include Minnesota trivia.
Back by popular demand is the old-fashioned radio show. The program will be performed in the newly heated Village Church at 11:00 a.m. with an encore presentation at 1:00 p.m. At 2:00 p.m. the piano students of Georgia Hanson will perform a recital.
The lunch line will feature a Pioneer Plate Special as well as many pioneer favorites. Serving will begin at 11:00 a.m.
Your day is sure to conjure up many memories, as the Society presents “A Settlers Christmas in the Village”. Admission is only $3.00 for adults, $1.00 for children aged 12 - 17, and free for those under age 11!
